João Duarte

João Duarte was born in Lisbon in 1952. He graduated from the School of Fine Arts of Lisbon in 1978. It is currently Professor (Sculpture and Medals) in the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon and Director of the Department for Research and Studies Volte Face - Contemporary Medals. As a sculptor, his work is part of the neo-expressionism style. Starting from the human figure, stylized it by rounding the forms, filling them with irony caused by the imbalance of small heads which crown bulging bodies of pitcher, with squat members. In the field of contemporary medal, gives evidence of his great talent and creativity, producing a break with medals concepts of the past, and ironically trying to reject the traditional characteristics of the medal and projecting them on a wide range of materials and shapes. João Duarte is already one of the most prestigious medal makers in the world, reaching all national and international awards in this category.
